On Tuesday, October 18, the East-West Gate multimodal terminal was officially opened in the Hungarian city of Feneszlitka, which is close to the Ukrainian border. It is assumed that he will also deal with transshipment of grain. This is reported by the Hungarian publication szon.hu.

“The goal was to build a logistics terminal in this region and put this area back on the logistics map of the continent. In Europe, rail will play an increasingly important role precisely because it is sustainable and meets the EU’s climate goals. I would like to occupy the largest possible share of European logistics,” said the CEO of East-West Gate Intermodal Zrt. Janos Talosi.

The ceremony was attended by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary, Peter Szijártó. He noted that the cost of building the terminal was 40 billion forints (approximately 97 million euros). In total, about 500 people will work here. Among the latest technologies, the terminal uses 5G communication.

He added that he hopes to realize the goals conceived in peacetime, but because of the war, investments have now been expanded with a new, short-term goal, namely the export of Ukrainian grain.

“If Ukrainian grain is not taken out of the country, a food crisis may arise in the less developed countries of the world. New transport routes are needed. The terminal can play a huge role in ensuring the arrival of Ukrainian grain to the ports of the Northern Adriatic,” the minister emphasized.

The East-West Gate terminal is expected to be able to handle up to one million TEUs. A feature is the presence of tracks of two standards – 1520 mm and 1435 mm.

The construction of the terminal was carried out in a short time. The works started at the beginning of 2021, and the facility was put into trial operation in March 2022.
