Record sunflower oil production in Kazakhstan
According to the results of eleven months of the 2024/2025 marketing year, Kazakhstani oil mills produced 526 thousand tons of unrefined sunflower oil, which is 18% more than for the same period last season. The National Association of Oilseed Processors (NAOPK) notes that this is a production record for this period.
The production of refined sunflower oil in September-July increased by 20%, reaching 148.1 thousand tons.
Growth is also observed for other types of oils:
- Rapeseed oil – +32%;
- Soybean oil – +28%;
- Flaxseed oil – +103%.
According to NAOPK forecasts, production volumes will continue to grow due to an increase in sown areas and expansion of processing capacities.
This year, according to preliminary estimates by NAOPK, Kazakhstan expects a record harvest of sunflower seeds — 1.8 million tons in weight after processing due to the growth of sunflower sowing areas to 1.8 million hectares (versus 1.28 million hectares a year earlier).
The areas for other oilseeds have also increased significantly:
- Flax — 1.3 million hectares (versus 972 thousand hectares);
- Rapeseed — 328 thousand hectares (versus 154 thousand hectares);
- Safflower — 411 thousand hectares (versus 377 thousand hectares).
The current processing capacity of oilseeds in Kazakhstan is 5 million tons per year, of which 4.1 million tons for sunflower. By 2028, it is planned to increase it to 6.5 million tons (for sunflower — up to 5.5 million tons).
In the northern regions of the country – Kostanay, Akmola and North Kazakhstan regions – there remains significant potential for expanding sown areas: the share of sunflower in crop rotation there does not yet exceed 5%, with a scientifically based norm of 17%.
Further development of the grain and oilseed markets of Ukraine and the Black Sea region will be in the spotlight of the BLACK SEA GRAIN. KYIV conference, taking place on April 22–23 in Kyiv. The event will focus on strategic directions for the agricultural sector through 2030, including investments, energy independence, processing, and exports of high-value products.
