2022/23 Argentina Corn 43% Planted, 15% Slower than Average
Weather in Argentina continues to be problematic. They had a temporary reprieve with some rain last week with lower temperatures. The weather this week looks generally dry again with the possibility of rain late in the week and into next week.
Yields of the early planted corn are going to be disappointing. The crop is under moisture and heat stress and the corn is rated 23% poor/very poor. The early planted corn is approximately 15% pollinating, so the weather over the next few weeks will be critical for the early planted corn.
More than 50% of the corn has not yet been planted and the question now is if the later planted corn will be able to make up for the problems with the earlier planted corn. If the weather improves in January and February, the later planted corn could still have acceptable yields. That is what happened last growing season, so we must be patient and see how the weather develops early in 2023.
The corn in Argentina was 42.6% planted as of late last week compared to 47.7% last year and 57.5% average. This represents an advance of 10% for the week. In the core production areas, the corn is 65-75% planted with 50-70% planted in southern Argentina and 0% planted in far northern Argentina.
The corn in Argentina is rated 23% poor/very poor, 59% fair, and 18% good/excellent. The good/excellent percentage is unchanged from the prior week. The soil moisture for the corn is rated 28% short/very short and 72% favorable/optimum. The favorable/optimum percentage is up 5% from the prior week. Below is the corn condition rating in Argentina from the Buenos Aires Grain Exchange for December 15, 2022.
