India increased wheat export quota to 6 mln tons
The government of India has approved an additional 2.5 mln tons of wheat exports after lifting a more than four-year ban on shipments. The food ministry said the move is aimed at stabilizing domestic prices and preventing distress sales by farmers.
The decision to expand export quotas followed a comprehensive review of current production, stock levels, and price trends. Authorities aim to balance supply, support farmer incomes, and maintain stability in the domestic food market.
With the latest approvals, total exports now stand at 5 mln tons of wheat and 1 mln tons of wheat products. According to the ministry, this will improve market liquidity, enable more efficient stock management, and reduce the risk of distress selling during the peak arrival season.
The export push comes amid expectations of a record harvest. Wheat procurement for the 2026/27 season (April–June) is gaining momentum across key producing states, including Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh. However, as of last week, only 5.13 mln tons had been procured, down 39% year-on-year, against a target of 30 mln tons.
Despite slower procurement, stock levels remain comfortable. At the beginning of April, government reserves exceeded 22 mln tons, well above the buffer requirement of 7.46 mln tons. Analysts say this has helped keep retail prices stable, averaging Rs 30.99 per kilogram. Wheat production in the 2025/26 season is projected at around 120 mln tons, potentially setting a new record.
