Zimbabwe exceeds winter wheat planting target

Zimbabwe has surpassed its winter wheat planting target for the 2026 season. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Mechanisation and Water Resources Development, farmers planted 126,394 hectares of winter wheat, reaching 101% of the national target of 125,000 hectares. The figure is also higher than the 120,000 hectares planted during the previous season.

ADAS Chief Director Mrs. Magwenzi said wheat has become an important component of the country’s Strategic Grain Reserve and a key staple food that helped Zimbabwe withstand the effects of drought. She credited the achievement to strong cooperation between farmers and the ministry throughout the planting campaign.

With sowing now completed, attention is shifting toward improving yields. Key priorities include better water management, timely fertilizer application, tailoring agronomic practices to local agroecological conditions, and controlling bird damage. Zimbabwe’s winter wheat planting campaign was carried out in three phases between mid-April and mid-June.
