Yemen buys French wheat for the first time in 4 years

Yemen is set to receive its first shipment of French wheat since September 2022. The total cargo will amount to 60 thsd tons, indicating a diversification of the country’s grain suppliers amid changes in the global market.

According to LSEG shipping data, a bulk carrier is expected to load 20 thsd tons of wheat at the French port of Dunkirk. The vessel has already loaded another 40 thsd tons at the port of Rouen and will then head to Yemen.

The shipment effectively marks the resumption of French wheat exports to Yemen after a break of more than four years. According to European Commission data, the previous deliveries of French grain to Yemeni ports took place in September 2022.

Dry and hot weather in France this season has improved grain quality, including its suitability for milling. This has strengthened the competitiveness of French wheat on international markets, although France continues to face competition from Romania and other major exporters.

The arrival of French wheat will increase grain supplies in Yemen, which remains heavily dependent on food imports. Amid the prolonged conflict and difficult economic conditions, stable supplies of staple foods, including wheat, remain important for the country’s food security.
