Winter crops in Ukraine in satisfactory condition, no more than 10% of areas may need reseeding
The condition of winter crops across most regions of Ukraine is assessed as satisfactory, with potential losses or the need for reseeding estimated at less than 10%. This was stated during a TV broadcast by Deputy Minister of Economy, Environment and Agriculture Taras Vysotskyi.
“In most regions the situation is satisfactory, meaning that the potential loss or need for reseeding (of winter crops) is less than 10%, which is a good result. At the same time, there are several regions where the situation is somewhat more complicated,” he said.
According to the deputy minister, the most difficult situation with winter crops is observed in the Kirovohrad region, where up to 40% of the areas may require reseeding or recovery. In Vinnytsia region, the Ministry estimates this figure at 20–30%, while in Odesa, Dnipropetrovsk, Poltava, and Cherkasy regions it stands at around 10–20% of production areas.
Vysotskyi noted that if necessary, farmers will reseed areas previously planted with wheat, barley, and rapeseed, replacing them with crops such as corn, sunflower, soybeans, or spring barley.
Among the main challenges of the spring campaign, he highlighted the situation in the energy and mineral fertilizers markets.
“We see that there may be fluctuations in petroleum product prices. This is a critical issue for the agricultural sector, because agriculture is one of the largest consumers of petroleum products, primarily diesel. We hope the situation will stabilize,” Vysotskyi stressed.
He also noted rising prices for mineral fertilizers due to instability in energy markets and continued attacks on energy infrastructure.
At the same time, Vysotskyi emphasized that seeds for the sowing campaign have already been purchased by the vast majority of farms, while farmers have sufficient reserves of fuel and fertilizers for at least several weeks or months, allowing fieldwork to begin without delays.
Further development of the grain and oilseed markets of Ukraine and the Black Sea region will be in the spotlight of the BLACK SEA GRAIN. KYIV conference, taking place on April 22–23 in Kyiv. The event will focus on strategic directions for the agricultural sector through 2030, including investments, energy independence, processing, and exports of high-value products.
