Winter canola could boost corn-soy rotation profitability in the US by 23%
Adding winter canola to the traditional corn-soybean rotation in the US Midwest could increase farm profitability and overall crop productivity. Researchers at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign reached this conclusion after modeling winter canola production in a double-cropping system.
The researchers compared a conventional corn-soybean rotation with a corn-canola-soybean system under different nitrogen fertilizer application rates. The model incorporated actual environmental and weather conditions in Illinois between 2019 and 2024. The best overall results were achieved when winter canola received full nitrogen support in both fall and spring.
According to the study, adding canola increased overall system productivity by 18% while maintaining stable greenhouse gas intensity. The canola-based system also improved carbon storage. All modeled diversified rotation scenarios were more profitable than the conventional corn-soybean system, generating 10% to 23% higher annual profits.
Researchers said one of the main advantages of winter canola is that it allows farmland to remain productive between fall harvest and spring planting. Instead of leaving fields without a commercial crop for around six months, farmers could grow canola, which protects the soil while providing an additional harvest. Canola seed could also serve as a feedstock for low-carbon fuels.
The findings are currently based on simulations and still need to be validated through field trials. Researchers believe winter canola is currently best suited to double cropping in southern Illinois, although the development of more cold-tolerant varieties could expand production further north across the US Midwest.
