Wheat and soybeans rise in Chicago on Monday, while corn slips

Wheat and soybean futures moved higher in Chicago on Monday, October 5, while corn edged lower. December CBOT wheat gained 1.35% to $254.34/t, November soybeans rose 0.16% to $470.59/t, while December corn slipped 0.10% to $195.77/t.

Wheat was supported by the slow pace of winter wheat planting in the US. As of October 4, 36% of the planned area had been planted, 10 percentage points below the five-year average. US wheat export inspections for the week totaled 302.4 thsd tons.

Corn ended the session slightly lower despite a new private sale of 129.54 thsd tons to Mexico. US corn harvest was 23% complete, 4 percentage points behind the average pace, while crop conditions declined to 54% rated good to excellent.

Soybean futures were supported by strong export demand. US soybean shipments totaled 1.138 mln tons for the week, while exports since the start of 2026/27 reached 3.986 mln tons, up 30.9% y/y. USDA also reported a private sale of 104 thsd tons of soybeans to unknown destinations.

European grain markets also moved higher. December wheat on MATIF rose to €245.75/t, while November corn climbed to €274.75/t.
