In 2020, kidney beans were the only pulse crop whose acreage expanded. The EU is the main buyer of Ukrainian kidney beans. During September – January EU countries boosted purchases of Ukrainian kidney beans by 31% from the same time last year.
Almost all chickpea figures show an opposite trend: the 2020 planted area was decreased with a consequent reduction in the crop and exportable supplies.
Strengthening demand from India may prompt Ukrainian farmers to expand chickpea plantings in 2021, UkrAgroConsult reports.
The lentil planted area in 2020 was also reduced, but evidently even to a greater extent than that of chickpeas, as lentil exports are down 82% y-o-y. We do not expect the country’s acreage of lentils to expand this year.
According to trade sources, the current export price of Ukrainian peas is uncompetitive compared to that of Russian origin, therefore importers prefer peas from Russia.
