Wet Weather Slows First Corn Planting in Parana, Brazil

Farmers in the southern Brazilian state of Parana had planted 47% of their intended first corn crop as of earlier this week according to the Department of Rural Economics (Deral). The corn is 43% germinating and 57% in vegetative development. The most advanced planting pace is in the southwestern part of the state. In far southern Parana, corn planting has been slow due to excessive soil moisture.

Deral estimates that farmers in the state will plant 406,400 hectares of first crop corn (1.00 million acres). A much larger corn crop will be planted after the soybeans are harvested starting in late December and early January. Farmers in the state started planting their 2022/23 soybeans last week and currently approximately 6% of the soybeans have been planted.

Deral reported that the 2021/22 safrinha corn was 99% harvested with the remaining unharvested areas in the northern part of the state. Safrinha corn yields have generally been below expectations due to dry weather during the growing season and a severe infestation of corn leafhoppers.
