USDA significantly raised its estimates for rapeseed meal consumption and imports in Southeast Asia in its August report. The largest revisions were made for Vietnam and Indonesia, where demand has turned out to be considerably stronger than expected just a month ago.

For Vietnam, USDA raised its estimate of rapeseed meal consumption in 2025/26 from 304 thsd tons to 444 thsd tons, an increase of 46%. The forecast for 2026/27 was revised even more sharply, from 255 thsd tons to 425 thsd tons, up 67% from the July estimate.

An even larger adjustment was made for Indonesia. USDA increased its estimate of rapeseed meal consumption in 2025/26 from 50 thsd tons to 220 thsd tons, a 4.4-fold increase. The rise in demand is fully covered by higher imports, while ending stocks remain close to zero.

For 2026/27, Indonesia’s rapeseed meal consumption forecast was also raised from 75 thsd tons to 120 thsd tons, or by 60%. China and Canada remain the main suppliers of rapeseed meal to Vietnam and Indonesia, with Chinese shipments significantly exceeding Canadian volumes in the Vietnamese market.

USDA’s sharp upward revisions highlight the growing importance of Southeast Asia in the global rapeseed meal market. Rising purchases by Vietnam and Indonesia are creating an additional outlet for exporters and could support global demand for rapeseed meal in 2026/27.
