USDA and ASU launch new project to strengthen resilience of Ukraine’s pig sector

A new project, “Enhancing the Resilience of Pig Production in Ukraine,” has been launched with support from the US Department of Agriculture and in cooperation with the Association of Ukrainian Pig Breeders. The initiative follows a previous cooperation project completed at the end of 2024 and will run until September 2027.

The main areas of work will include biosecurity, disease control, animal welfare, responsible use of antimicrobials, improved herd productivity and stronger advisory support for farms. Producers will also be offered technical audits, individual consultations and benchmarking.

A separate part of the project will focus on strengthening African swine fever control. It will include the development of standard operating procedures, practical training and simulation exercises covering ASF outbreaks, regionalization, disease control in wild fauna and humane culling.

Another priority will be laboratory diagnostics and reducing dependence on antibiotics. The project will examine antimicrobial resistance and promote alternative solutions, including vaccination, autogenous vaccines, probiotics, acids and bacteriophages, as well as modern research methods such as microbiome analysis, metagenomics and metabolomics.

The project will also include a reproductive management school, online and offline training, laboratory support, practical work with experts and study tours abroad. Organizers expect these tools to help Ukrainian pig farms improve production practices, biosecurity and operational efficiency.
