US spring wheat crops are in poor condition
The spring wheat season in the US is nearing its end. The first official assessment of the spring wheat crop condition was worse than expected.
According to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), as of May 31, 6% of the planned spring wheat acreage remained to be planted. The share of wheat crops in excellent and good condition does not exceed 47%. As of the same date in 2025, 50% of the crops were in excellent and good condition, compared to an average of 56% over the past five years.
Corn planting is also nearing its end. As of May 31, 93% of the planned corn acreage had been planted. The share of corn crops in excellent and good condition is 67% (69% as of the same date in 2025).
Soybean planting has been completed on 87% of the acreage. Sixty-six percent (67%) of winter wheat crops are in good or excellent condition.
Winter wheat harvesting has already begun in five states. Nationally, 5% of the crop area has been threshed. Harvesting progress is ahead of the five-year average.
The share of winter wheat crops in excellent or good condition remains at 26%, significantly lower than the 52% seen last year.
