US seeks to regain lost ground in China’s soybean market

The United States and Brazil are intensifying competition for China’s soybean market, the world’s largest. Amid ongoing trade tensions, the share of U.S. suppliers has declined significantly, while Brazil has strengthened its position as the leading exporter of the oilseed to China.

American industry organizations are now attempting to recover lost market share by emphasizing the quality of North American soybeans. The U.S. Soybean Export Council notes that climatic differences between production regions in the United States and South America affect yields and product quality, factors that buyers should take into account.

Over the past decade, China’s import structure has shifted markedly. While the United States and Brazil once each supplied around 40% of China’s soybean imports, the introduction of U.S. tariffs led to a sharp rise in Brazil’s dominance. Today, more than 60% of China’s soybean imports come from Brazil, around 23% from the United States, and about 10% from Argentina.

Despite this, the United States has seen a modest recovery in sales amid agreements between Beijing and Washington. According to official data, China has already fulfilled its commitment to purchase 12 million tonnes of U.S. soybeans in the current marketing year, while new contracts have started to emerge since June.

However, analysts say a rapid return of the U.S. to a dominant position is unlikely. Export volumes are expected to fluctuate in the range of 25–30 million tonnes in the coming years, with a more substantial increase to 40 million tonnes only possible in the longer term, provided trade relations stabilize.
