US returns to Bangladesh corn market after eight-year absence

The US returned to Bangladesh’s corn market in 2025/26 after an eight-year absence, securing around a 6% share of imports. According to USDA, Bangladesh imported more than 1.74 mln tons of corn, of which around 111 thsd tons came from the US.

Brazil remained the largest supplier with a 68% share, while India accounted for 24% of imports. Brazil’s share nevertheless fell sharply from around 93% in 2024/25.

The return of US corn began with an initial purchase of around 60 thsd tons by three Bangladeshi feed companies. At the same time, India’s exportable corn surplus has declined in recent years as more grain is diverted to biofuel production, creating more opportunities for alternative suppliers.

In 2026/27, Bangladesh’s private sector is expected to increase corn imports by 3.4% y/y to 1.8 mln tons. Demand remains strong due to continued growth in poultry, aquaculture and livestock production, which drives the country’s need for feed grain.

USDA forecasts Bangladesh’s domestic corn production at 6 mln tons, up 1.7% y/y, but this is still insufficient to meet demand. Total annual requirements exceed 7.1 mln tons, while around 90% of the domestic crop is consumed by the feed industry.
