US boosts Brazilian beef imports amid record minced beef prices

The US became the largest buyer of Brazilian beef in August, accounting for 16% of Brazil’s exports. Shipments could increase further after Washington moved to allow imports of up to 300 thsd tons of minced beef at lower duty rates over a 90-day period.

One of the main drivers behind the decision was the sharp rise in domestic beef prices. Average US retail prices for minced beef hit another record high in August as a smaller cattle herd continued to constrain supply. High meat prices are also adding to broader food inflation.

Brazil is expected to be the main beneficiary of the new terms. According to XP analysts, the country could supply around two thirds of the lower-duty import volume, or roughly 200 thsd tons.

For Brazilian exporters, expanded access to the US market comes as conditions become more challenging in other destinations. China has imposed quotas on beef imports, while the EU has tightened requirements on the use of antimicrobials in livestock production.

Analysts also note that Brazil supplies lean beef, which is in short supply in the US and is widely used in minced beef production. This is providing additional support to demand for Brazilian beef and could strengthen the US position among Brazil’s key export markets.
