Uruguay cuts live cattle exports
Uruguay’s live cattle exports declined in August both month-on-month and year-on-year. According to the National Meat Institute (INAC), the country exported 18 thsd head, down 16 thsd from July and 12 thsd from August 2025.
In January-August, Uruguay exported 222.9 thsd head of live cattle, down 8.6% compared with the same period last year.
Turkey remains the main destination, accounting for around 60% of shipments, or 134 thsd head. Israel accounts for 34% of exports and Morocco for 6%. At the same time, Turkey’s share continues to decline, from 95% in 2024 to 77% in 2025.
Most exported cattle were males, totaling around 172 thsd head, or 77.2% of the total. Nearly 88% of the animals were under two years old at the time of shipment.
Meanwhile, Turkey has set its 2027 import quota for feeder cattle at 480 thsd head, 4% below the 2026 level. This could further limit export opportunities for major live cattle suppliers, including Uruguay.
