Unusual July rainfall distribution had mixed impact on Ukraine’s crop conditions

Agrometeorological conditions across Ukraine were mixed during the third ten-day period of July, affecting crop development differently across regions. According to the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center, cooler-than-normal weather prevailed for most of the period, with the average air temperature 2–3°C below normal and daily deviations reaching 3–7°C on the coldest days.

Several cyclones and cold fronts crossed the country during the period, bringing heavy rain, strong winds and hail. However, rainfall distribution was unusual: western regions received significantly less precipitation than central, southern and eastern Ukraine, where the highest rainfall totals were recorded.

In the Right Bank regions, cool and wet weather created additional risks for early grain crops. High air and soil moisture increased the risk of fungal diseases and grain discoloration while slowing crop maturity. Frequent rainfall and heavy dew also delayed harvesting operations and encouraged the spread of crop pests.

Meanwhile, parts of the Kharkiv region and southern Ukraine continued to experience soil moisture deficits. Ongoing drought conditions suppressed crop development, accelerated the maturation of late-season crops and could reduce their yield potential. Low nighttime air and soil temperatures also negatively affected heat-loving and vegetable crops.

Despite localized problems, the cooler weather helped reduce soil moisture evaporation. Combined with periodic rainfall, this allowed soil moisture supplies to remain generally adequate across most agricultural regions, although crop development during the remainder of the season will largely depend on weather conditions in August.
