Ukrainians farmers delay grain sales as prices fall sharply
Ukrainian farmers are increasingly postponing grain sales after a sharp decline in domestic purchasing prices. According to market participants, wheat prices on some delivery routes dropped by as much as UAH 800 per ton overnight, prompting many producers to reconsider their marketing plans.
The steepest declines were recorded for milling wheat and feed wheat. Several major grain buyers reduced their bids by UAH 800/t, while prices at some inland elevators fell by nearly UAH 1,000/t within a single day.
The market downturn has been driven in part by disruptions to export logistics following recent attacks on port infrastructure. As a result, some traders have temporarily suspended purchases, while others have significantly lowered their bids, putting immediate pressure on domestic grain prices.
Under these conditions, many farmers are choosing to postpone sales. Producers say current prices do not reflect the value of the new crop, while logistics uncertainty has further reduced their willingness to sell. As a result, many farms prefer to store grain and wait for market conditions to improve.
Some producers are already looking for alternatives to selling grain at current prices. Farmers who have modern grain storage facilities or recently invested in upgrading their elevators are in a better position to wait for a market recovery. Some even joke that, at today’s prices, it makes more economic sense to feed grain to pigs than to sell it directly from the field at a substantial loss.
