Ukraine’s integration could strengthen the EU agricultural sector
Ukraine’s integration into the European Union could not only enhance security but also strengthen the bloc’s economy, particularly its agricultural and heavy industry sectors. This was stated by Taras Kachka, who is expected to officially take up his post as head of Ukraine’s Mission to the EU in September.
According to Kachka, a key task is to demonstrate the mutual economic benefits of further integration. Ukraine could complement the EU’s production capabilities in several sectors and help make European industries more competitive, while the European market and financial mechanisms provide additional opportunities for the Ukrainian economy.
Kachka highlighted agriculture as one of the sectors where closer integration could bring significant benefits. Ukrainian agricultural products already play an important role in the EU food industry, despite concerns in some member states that Ukrainian farmers could increase competition within the single market.
As an example of this interdependence, Kachka pointed to Spain, where Ukrainian feed corn is used by pig farms. Ukrainian agricultural imports therefore provide raw materials for European livestock producers and support the production of higher value-added food products.
Against this background, Kachka stressed the importance of communicating the economic benefits of Ukraine’s integration more actively across the EU. He argued that the discussion should focus not only on potential competition within the single market, but also on how Ukraine’s agricultural and industrial sectors can contribute to the competitiveness of the European economy.
