Ukraine’s blueberry yields are three times below the global average

Ukraine’s blueberry area has reached around 6,000 ha, placing the country 10th globally and first in Eastern Europe. However, further development of the sector will increasingly depend not on acreage expansion but on improving the productivity of existing plantations.

According to the IBO Global Blueberry Report 2026, analyzed by the Ukrainian Berries Association, the country’s average blueberry yield stands at just 2.87 t/ha. This is more than three times below the global average of 9.05 t/ha.

At the same time, the geography of Ukrainian blueberry exports is changing. Producers are gradually reducing their dependence on the Polish market and expanding direct shipments to the Netherlands, Scandinavian countries and the UK, helping diversify their sales channels.

However, maintaining a stable presence in European markets will require Ukrainian growers to meet increasingly stringent buyer requirements. Key conditions include international certification, high-quality packaging and strict product quality control.

According to industry experts, the future competitiveness of Ukrainian blueberries will primarily depend on yields, varietal composition, growing technologies and mechanization. Protection against weather risks and producers’ ability to meet European market standards will also remain important.
