Ukraine to join EU agricultural policy under special model – Marta Kos
Ukraine will become part of the European Union’s agricultural policy under a special model that will allow it to continue exporting grain to traditional markets in North Africa and Asia rather than primarily to Europe.
“Regarding special arrangements for Ukraine’s agriculture, Ukraine will become part of the European agricultural policy in a special format or under a special model. The details will be discussed between the member states and, of course, Ukraine. The member states will determine the specific terms during Ukraine’s EU accession negotiations under Cluster 5,” European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos said at a press conference following the fourth intergovernmental conference on Ukraine’s accession to the EU.
The European Commission previously proposed special terms for Ukraine’s EU membership in the agri-food sector, particularly for grain, emphasizing the continuation of exports to Ukraine’s traditional markets, mainly in North Africa.
Kos said the EU aims to protect its farmers while helping Ukraine sell its products in traditional markets. According to her, the special arrangements are intended to ensure that Ukraine’s EU membership benefits both sides, protect European farmers and support the development of Ukraine’s agricultural sector through alignment with the EU’s agricultural policy rules while preserving export opportunities to countries in Africa, Asia and the Middle East.
