Ukraine ready to expand biomethane supplies to the EU
Ukraine is ready to increase biomethane supplies to the European Union and is working to remove regulatory barriers to exports. The issue was discussed in Brussels by Agriculture Minister Taras Vysotskyi and representatives of the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Energy.
One of the key priorities is Ukraine’s integration into the Union Database, the EU system for tracing sustainable fuels and biomethane. The parties also discussed verification of biomethane flows and recognition of Ukrainian guarantees of origin.
According to the Agriculture Ministry, Ukraine already has the production and infrastructure base needed to expand exports. National legislation has been harmonised with RED III requirements, producers are being certified under European standards, and Ukraine’s gas transmission system is integrated with the EU gas network.
Ukraine already has biomethane facilities commissioned in recent years, while a number of new projects are at different stages of development. Ukrainian producers have also completed their first test supplies of biomethane to the EU.
The ministry said further expansion of Ukrainian production could contribute to the EU target of increasing biomethane production to 35 bln cubic metres per year by 2030.
