Ukraine. Processors request permission to import GM rapeseed with subsequent re-export of manufactured products

Rapeseed processors are asking the parliament to amend the current law on GMO regulation and allow the import of GM rapeseed into Ukraine with subsequent re-export of products made from it. This was stated by the People’s Deputy, Deputy Chairman of the Agrarian Committee Stepan Chernyavskyi, following the meeting of rapeseed processors with the First Deputy Minister of Agrarian Affairs Taras Vysotsky, the leadership of the State Service for Food Safety, the Phytosanitary Service, the Dermatological Service, and deputies.
According to the deputy, the processors appealed to those present at the meeting with a request to allow the import of GM rapeseed into Ukraine for processing with subsequent re-export of products made from it.
“They motivate this by the shortage of Ukrainian-produced rapeseed for processing, the volumes of which have significantly decreased due to the sown areas in the territories occupied by Russia,” he explains.
To close the gap, processors propose amending the law (from 2007) that regulates GMO processes in Ukraine, changing it in terms of purchasing imported GM rapeseed, its processing at Ukrainian plants, and re-export to other countries.
