Market overview | 2026/27 season

Ukraine’s oilseed market is entering 2026/27 with materially stronger production potential, but also with a broader set of risks around its monetisation. Following the release of official planted-area data, UkrAgroConsult revised the crop mix: soybeans lose acreage, rapeseed gains ground, while sunflower remains the core of the sector. The early-August outlook puts the total oilseed crop at 21.9 M mt, with higher yields remaining the main driver of the expected production recovery.

The revised acreage structure creates different market trajectories for the three major crops. Sunflower is supported by a yield recovery and a solid raw-material base, while higher soybean yields are not sufficient to offset the sharp reduction in planted area. Rapeseed, in contrast, enters the season with expanding supply and stronger prospects for domestic crushing. The multi-season crop structure also points to a rebound from the weaker previous year, but the improvement is uneven across crops and therefore changes the competitive balance between exporters and processors.

Sunflower remains the largest and most strategically important segment, with supply forecast at about 13.4 M mt in the new season. Ukraine’s crushing industry has enough capacity to absorb almost the entire available volume, so the market constraint is no longer processing capacity itself. The decisive issue is whether plants can operate consistently and move sunflower oil and meal through seaports. The supply-and-demand balance therefore shifts the market question from “is there enough seed?” to “can the export chain function without prolonged disruption?”

Logistics is increasingly determining how margins are distributed between farmers, crushers and exporters. Unstable port operations may delay shipments, build carryover stocks and widen the gap between inland and export prices. For rapeseed, this creates room for a larger share of additional supply to be processed domestically, while soybean competition between exporters and crushers may intensify. UkrAgroConsult expects the ability to switch between raw-material exports and processed-product exports to become as important as crop size itself in 2026/27.

Weather remains the second critical variable for the season. August heat and limited rainfall have already weakened some sunflower and soybean fields, while weather models suggest only moderate relief, leaving room for further crop revisions. The growing frequency of heat and drought across the wider Black Sea-Danube-Balkan region also raises the risk of simultaneous supply pressure in several producing countries and stronger competition among crushers. The season therefore combines high production potential with elevated dependence on weather, port logistics and the market’s ability to redirect flows quickly.

Key market trends

  • Strong oilseed production potential supports the 2026/27 outlook, but the season’s commercial result will increasingly depend on reliable crushing operations, seaport access and uninterrupted export channels.
  • The crop mix is becoming more differentiated: sunflower and rapeseed have stronger supply and processing prospects, while soybeans move into a tighter balance after a major acreage reduction.
  • Logistics disruptions could convert additional crop volumes into higher carryover stocks and weaker inland prices, strengthening the position of operators with secure storage, energy supply and export access.
  • Domestic crushing is gaining strategic importance for sunflower and rapeseed, and the ability to switch between seed exports and higher-value processed products is becoming a core competitive advantage.
  • August weather remains the main uncertainty for spring oilseeds, while simultaneous heat and drought across the Black Sea-Danube-Balkan region could tighten regional feedstock availability and intensify crusher competition.
