Ukraine increases vegetable oil exports by rail
Ukraine significantly increased its vegetable oil exports by rail in August. During the first 25 days of the month, 89.3 thsd tons of vegetable oil were shipped abroad by rail, up 12.8% from July and 52% compared with the same period last year.
Most of the oil was shipped through western border crossings. This route accounted for 72.7 thsd tons, or more than 80% of total rail exports. Only 16.6 thsd tons were transported towards Ukrainian ports.
The growing role of western routes was also evident in shipments of oilseed processing products. During the first 25 days of August, 133.3 thsd tons of meal and oilcake were exported by rail, up 1.3% from July. However, the volume was 8.6% lower than in the same period last year.
Of the total meal and oilcake exports, 97.9 thsd tons were shipped through western border crossings, while another 35.4 thsd tons were transported by rail towards ports.
Thus, western border crossings accounted for the bulk of rail exports of both vegetable oil and meal and oilcake in August. The increase in vegetable oil shipments was particularly notable: amid the rerouting of cargo flows, rail exports were more than 1.5 times higher than a year earlier.
