Ukraine increases soybean production

In 2022, more than 1.5 million hectares were sown to soybeans in Ukraine, which is a critical crop for European protein supplies, and 3.7 million tons were harvested. This is 7% more than last year, according to the press service of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine.

About 658 thousand tons of Ukrainian soybeans (17.5% of total production) were certified as compliant with the principles of sustainability. That is, it is not genetically modified and is grown on land without deforestation and land use change, according to the standards of the Danube Soybean Association. This ensures strict compliance with EU regulations on plant protection systems, greenhouse gas emission reductions and traceability to the field, as contained in the new EU requirements for the supply of raw materials that are risky for forests and ecosystems. The new EU FECR regulations are scheduled to enter into force in 2024.

This significant result was achieved through the implementation of the Protein Partnership Program. The program is aimed at stimulating the production of non-GM soybeans in a sustainable way for further supply to European countries. The partners are investing in extension activities and certification of farmers and elevators in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Moldova, Serbia and Ukraine.

As the Danube Soybean Association emphasized, Ukrainian farmers are steadfastly adhering to the principles of sustainable agricultural production and continue to contribute to global food security.
