Ukraine Heatwave: Is It Time to Cut the 2026 Corn Crop Forecast?
UkrAgroConsulst position is that despite the recent heatwave, there is still no reason to significantly reduce Ukraine’s corn production outlook.
As of early July, corn and sunflower have not yet entered their most sensitive stages — pollination and grain filling. The heat lasted only about one week, so its impact has so far been limited to localized areas with light soils and low moisture reserves.
Current weather models indicate cooler temperatures of around 25-27°C together with rainfall. If this forecast proves correct, the market is likely to maintain its current expectation of corn yields above 7.3 mt/ha, implying production of more than 32.5 M mt.
The key period is still ahead. For now, weather risk is a possibility, not yet a market reality. Corn pollination begins in mid-July. If temperatures exceed 36°C during this stage and rainfall remains limited, production estimates and price expectations could change very quickly.
