Ukraine harvests its first million tons of corn
As of October 5, Ukrainian farmers had harvested 1.62 mln tons of corn, while the country’s average yield increased, according to the Ministry of Agrarian Policy.
Over the week, corn production more than doubled, increasing by 834 thsd tons. The harvested area also nearly doubled, from 153.3 thsd ha as of September 28 to 294.2 thsd ha as of October 5.
At the same time, the average corn yield increased from 5.15 t/ha to 5.52 t/ha.
Overall, corn is expected to be harvested from 4.56 mln ha this year. So far, 6.5% of the forecast area has been harvested.
As of October 5, the largest corn volume was harvested in Poltava region — 435.1 thsd tons. The crop was harvested from 77 thsd ha there, with an average yield of 5.65 t/ha.
In Sumy region, farmers harvested 312.9 thsd tons of corn from 37.9 thsd ha, with a yield of 8.26 t/ha. In Kyiv region, 178.5 thsd tons were harvested from 35 thsd ha at an average yield of 5.1 t/ha.
The top five regions by harvested volume also included Chernihiv region with 135 thsd tons and a yield of 9 t/ha, and Dnipropetrovsk region with 126.6 thsd tons and a yield of 2.58 t/ha.
The highest corn yield among the regions where harvesting has already started is currently recorded in Ivano-Frankivsk region at 11.44 t/ha. It is followed by Chernihiv region at 9 t/ha, Sumy region at 8.26 t/ha and Ternopil region at 8.02 t/ha.
