This year, due to hostilities and worsening weather conditions, Ukraine will have a much smaller harvest than last year. However, it will be quite enough to ensure the food security of our country and preserve its export potential. Yes, we are talking about more than 51 million tons of grain and 16 million tons of oilseeds.

Director of the Department of Agrarian Development of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine Ihor Vishtak said this during a briefing at the Ukraine media center.

He noted that currently the harvesting of grain and leguminous crops has been carried out on an area of 9 million hectares (81%) with a yield of 43.4 tons/ha. 39.1 million tons of grain were threshed.

Regarding the sowing campaign of winter crops, it has already been completed by 94%. Thus, 4.4 million hectares of grain were sown. Winter rapeseed – almost 1 million hectares.

According to Ihor Vishtak, the Ministry of Agricultural Policy is also assessing the needs for the spring sowing campaign. In particular, the need for fertilizers for the spring season will be approximately 1.5 million tons. The need for nitrogen fertilizers – more than 1 million tons – will be able to be provided by domestic enterprises. The need for complex fertilizers – 0.5 million tons – will be partly covered by domestic production, partly by imports.

The director of the Department of Agrarian Development of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine also commented on the situation in animal husbandry. According to Ihor Vishtak, it is critical in a number of regions. In particular, the reduction of livestock is more than 20%. There are also reductions in poultry farming. “Poultry farming is recovering at a fast pace, but as for cattle, it will take time,” he noted.

Currently, according to him, the mechanism of assessment and possible payments for damages caused to Ukrainian agricultural producers is being worked out.
