Ukraine. Crops are now rated mostly fair to good

Very warm weather for this time of year dominated the country on January 1-10. Because of abnormally warm weather, slow growth processes were reported in winter crops almost all over Ukraine. The only exception was the east, where average and maximum air temperatures were below the level needed for growth resumption. Crops are now rated mostly fair to good, UkrAgroConsult reports.
3-8 mm-thick ice crust was observed in individual fields in Kharkiv, Poltava, Luhansk and Chernihiv regions on December 21-31. Then it melted as daytime air temperature had risen.
At cold nights, soil temperature at the tillering-node depth of winter crops fell to 0 … -2ºС, even to -5ºC in Luhansk, Kharkiv, Sumy regions, which is far higher than the critical winterkill level.
Precipitation in the form of rain and sleet of various intensity occurred almost all over the country, except for the south. The average amount of precipitation in most regions was 10-23 mm.
As of December 31, 2020, the fields in Kharkiv, Sumy regions, occasionally in Chernihiv and Luhansk ones, were covered with 1-10 cm of snow, locally with 11-15 cm. The rest of the country was free of snow.
Weather forecast for January 13-17:
– Precipitation (5-10 mm) in the form of snow, sleet, rain is expected in the western, northern, eastern regions. The central and southern ones will get 2-5 mm;
– Air temperature will be 0 … -2°C in the West, -3 … -5°C in the North, -1 … 3°C in the Center, 0 … -2°C in the East, and 0 … +2°C in the South;
