Ukraine becomes the second largest exporter of honey to the EU
Ukraine ranked second in terms of honey exports to the EU in 2023. Honey is most popular in Germany, which took 25% of all imports. This is evidenced by Eurostat data.
In total, the EU imported more than 163 thousand tons of honey in 2023 for 359.3 million euros. At the same time, the countries of the Union also exported honey for 146 million euros (almost 25 thousand tons). Compared to 2013, honey imports from outside the EU increased by 20% and exports by 14%.
Which countries are the largest suppliers
China supplied the most honey to the EU – 37% (over 60 thousand tons). Ukraine took the second place – 28% (almost 46 thousand tons).
The top five countries are as follows:
- Argentina – 12%
- Mexico – 7%
- Cuba – 3%
Who buys honey in the EU
The UK became the leader in honey imports from the EU – 4300 tons (17%). This is followed by Saudi Arabia (14%), Switzerland (13%), the United States (13%) and Japan (10%).
The largest importers and exporters within the EU
Germany was the largest importer of honey in the EU – 41 thousand tons or 25% of total imports. Belgium is in second place (19%), followed by Poland (14%), Spain (10%) and France (5%).
The largest exporter was Spain, which shipped 7,100 tons of honey to countries outside the EU, or 29% of total exports. This is followed by Germany (22% of total exports), Romania (7%), Hungary (6%), and Greece (6%).
