Ukraine. Available snow cover prevents significant soil freezing
Very contrasting weather was seen on February 1-10: it ranged from warm and wet early in the period to cold, windy conditions with snowstorms, snowdrifts, slush build-up, then followed by the formation of slippery surfaces. During the intense cold snap on February 6-10, the lowest soil temperature at the tillering-node depth of winter crops reached -1…-8ºC at cold nights. This is far above the crop-killing level, especially with snow cover available.
Significant temperature fluctuation was observed in January and the first half of February. Periods of severe frost alternated with thaws. This may have had an adverse impact on survival of winter grains.
Plant condition is still an issue. This especially concerns crops that were underdeveloped when entering the winter (in the stage of 2-3 leaves). However, available snow cover prevents significant soil freezing, UkrAgroConsult reports. Winter grains are now rated fair to good.
Weather forecast for February 15-21:
– The western and central regions are expected to receive 2-10 mm of snow. The rest of the country will see no precipitation;
– Winter crops in most of the country will be covered with enough snow for plant protection;
– Winter crops in the eastern regions may get partially damaged because of insufficient snow cover;
– Winter crops are not expected to get exposed to dangerously low temperatures;
– Air temperature in the West will be -8 … -10°C in the daytime, -14 … -16°C at night; the North will see -10 … -12°C at the daytime, -17 … -19°C at night; the Central regions will be exposed to -9 … -11°C in the daytime, -15 … -17°C at night; the East will get -5 … -7°C in the daytime, -12 … -14°C at night; and the South will witness -3 … -5°C in the daytime, -11 … -13°C at night.
