Ukraine and World Bank move from irrigation planning to project implementation
Ukraine and the World Bank are moving from analytical work to the practical implementation of projects to restore and develop irrigation systems. The parties discussed the results of the Irrigation Master Plan and the next steps for joint investment projects.
The Master Plan outlines 25 priority stages for irrigation recovery and development covering around 913 thsd ha. The estimated investment needed to implement them is €5.9 billion.
The parties also discussed preparations for the RIVERS project. Its first stage will focus on modernizing irrigation systems and water management infrastructure in Odesa region, including canals, pumping stations, locks and water facilities.
RIVERS also envisages the creation of a national digital platform for water resource planning and management, as well as improvements to the legal and institutional framework for irrigation. Total financing needs for the project are estimated at $100 million.
The World Bank confirmed its readiness to continue cooperation with Ukraine and move toward implementation of specific projects. It is also preparing a new RDNA6 damage and recovery needs assessment that will cover the agricultural sector and irrigation infrastructure.
