Ukraine supplied Germany with 28% more rapeseed in the first half of the season
In 2024, Germany harvested less rapeseed than in the previous year. Despite the reduction in domestic supplies, rapeseed imports in the first half of the 2024/25 season will remain lower than in the previous year, according to the German Oilseed and Grain Crops Promotion Union (UFOP).
According to the Federal Statistical Office, in the first half of the 2024/25 MY, Germany imported about 3.1 million tons of rapeseed, which is 8% less than in the same period last year. Ukraine, as before, occupies a leading position in the list of countries of origin of imported rapeseed this season. The country supplied 1.3 million tons of rapeseed to the German market, which is about 28% more than in the same period last year.
According to Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft, the pace of deliveries is likely to slow down in the second half of the marketing year, as Ukraine can only count on a harvest that will be about 21% smaller than the previous one. However, the main focus is on the second wave of deliveries from Australia, which ranks second among the most important producing countries. So far, Germany has received 378.9 thousand tons of rapeseed from Australia, which is more than double the previous year’s figure of 161 thousand tons. tons. About 1.4 million tons were delivered from neighboring EU countries, which is 32% less than in the same period last year. The majority fell to Lithuania – 337 thousand tons, followed by France – 310 thousand tons and Romania – 237 thousand tons.
Germany is the largest net importer of rapeseed in the EU with an average purchase volume of 5.5 to 5.7 million tons. German oil refineries process around 9.4 million tonnes of rapeseed annually. Accordingly, exports of the crop are significantly lower than imports. In the first six months of the current season, Germany exported a total of around 32.9 thousand tonnes of rapeseed, which is around 6% more than in the same period last year, despite a smaller harvest. German rapeseed is mainly supplied to other EU member states, for example, Belgium (around 9.1 thousand tonnes), Poland (4.1 thousand tonnes) and the Netherlands (3.8 thousand tonnes).
