UK grain equipment maker integrates AI into grain dryer software

British engineering company Perry is beginning to integrate artificial intelligence into its grain dryer software. According to company co-owner David Perry, AI could significantly change the management and monitoring of grain handling equipment over the next decade.

AI-based technologies are already being used in optical sorters and grain analysis systems. Perry also sells a system that can analyze a small grain sample and identify around 30 physical parameters in approximately 30 seconds.

The system can automatically assess impurities, insect presence, insect damage and broken kernels. Many of these parameters previously required manual analysis, while traditional equipment at large grain facilities mainly measures moisture and protein content.

For large grain companies, the main advantage of automated analysis is greater accuracy in quality assessment. When purchasing hundreds of thousands of tons of grain, even small deviations in quality parameters can result in significant financial losses.

More accurate quality assessment can also reduce disputes further along the supply chain. According to Perry, more detailed analysis before shipment lowers the risk of a load being rejected by a processing facility and helps avoid costs associated with rejected trucks and additional grain handling.
