UFOP notes a 60% increase in rapeseed imports to the EU from Ukraine
From the beginning of the marketing year to October 6, 2024, the EU imported 1.41 million tons of rapeseed, which is a good 17% more than in the same period last year. The 2024 crop resulted in a below average harvest, so the need for imports this season is high. Two-thirds of the imports came from Ukraine, according to the German Oilseed and Grain Promotion Association (UFOP).
As in previous years, Ukraine remains the most important country of origin for rapeseed, the Union notes, with an import volume of 960,400 tons and an import share of 68%. Last year’s volume of 599.4 thousand tons was exceeded by 60%. However, according to Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft (mbH), Ukraine is unlikely to be able to maintain these figures in the coming months. The reason for such expectations is that this year’s harvest is a quarter smaller, which significantly limits the export potential.
In second place among rapeseed suppliers to the EU is Australia with 351.8 thousand tons and a share of 25% of imports. This is 3% more than in the same period last year. Moldova with the volume of 56.2 thousand tons takes the third place. Shipments from this country more than halved compared to the same period last year. Canada has yet to ship any significant volumes this marketing year, but may increase its share due to a very large crop and China’s failure to become an importing country. However, due to the presence of GMOs, Canadian rapeseed cannot be fully utilized in the EU. The biofuel market remains an option for the realization of Canadian rapeseed.
