EU strengthens the role of biomethane from agricultural waste in its energy strategy
The European Union is strengthening the role of biomethane in its energy strategy, placing it alongside renewables and nuclear power as a tool to reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen highlighted biomethane in her State of the Union address.
The focus is increasingly on expanding domestic energy production within Europe. Biomethane can be produced from agricultural residues, livestock waste and other organic feedstocks, directly linking its development to the agricultural sector.
One of biomethane’s main advantages is that it can use existing gas infrastructure. This makes it suitable for supplying renewable gas to industrial users and heating systems in sectors where full electrification remains difficult.
The European Commission also links biomethane development to lower energy costs and improved industrial competitiveness. Further growth of the sector will depend largely on investment, regulatory support and infrastructure development.
Greater policy attention to biomethane could stimulate new projects for processing agricultural waste and organic feedstocks in the EU. It also increases the importance of agriculture as a source of raw materials for renewable gas production.
