Turkish crushers benefit from cheaper Black Sea sunflower seed

A larger sunflower crop in Romania and Turkey’s earlier reduction of its import duty are creating favorable conditions for stronger Black Sea trade. The completion of harvesting is increasing supply and seasonal price pressure, while Turkish crushers have an opportunity to purchase raw materials during the period of the most competitive prices.

Romania. Production prospects have improved due to higher yield and acreage estimates. Sunflower seed exports are already active, with Turkey becoming the main destination. A larger crop strengthens Romania’s export potential and its role as a raw material supplier to regional crushers.

Turkey. The expected earlier reduction of the import duty from October allows Turkish crushers to step up purchases during the seasonal price low. This could make Turkish demand an important supporting factor for the Black Sea market this autumn. However, the benefits of imports could be reduced by stronger Romanian prices, higher freight costs and competition from EU crushers.

The combination of larger regional supply and easier access to the Turkish market creates an additional outlet for Black Sea sunflower seed. If Turkish purchases remain active, they could partly offset seasonal new-crop pressure and strengthen competition for raw materials across the region.
