Turkey to raise Bosporus and Dardanelles transit fees by 15% from July 1
Turkey will increase the value of the gold franc used to calculate fees for vessels transiting the Turkish Straits of the Bosporus and Dardanelles without calling at ports starting July 1. This marks another annual tariff revision introduced by Ankara since 2022, according to Türkiye Today.
The new rate will be $6.7 per gold franc, nearly 15% higher than the current $5.83 level. It will remain in effect until June 30, 2027.
Under the Montreux Convention regarding the regime of the Straits, vessels passing through the Bosporus and Dardanelles without port calls pay fees for sanitary inspection, lighthouse services, and rescue operations.
Charges depend on a vessel’s net tonnage (NRT) and are calculated in gold francs, a historical accounting unit established under the 1936 Convention. One gold franc corresponds to approximately 0.290322 grams of pure gold.
According to Turkish daily Milliyet, after the increase, a vessel with a net capacity of 10,000 tonnes will pay around $25,000 in total transit fees.
