Turkey plans to increase biomethane production to 10 bcm per year
Turkey plans to significantly expand biomethane production to reduce emissions and dependence on imported fossil fuels. According to industry association BİYOYATDER, upgrading existing biogas infrastructure could enable the country to produce up to 10 bcm of biomethane annually by 2040.
Turkey currently operates 101 biogas facilities and 97 landfill gas plants. The association estimates that systematic upgrades could lift annual biomethane production to around 3 bcm by 2030, 5 bcm by 2035 and 10 bcm by 2040.
Existing biogas facilities already process around 10 mln tons of organic waste annually. A significant share of feedstock could come from livestock and agricultural waste, allowing Turkey to reduce methane emissions while producing renewable fuel.
According to BİYOYATDER, operating upgraded facilities at full capacity could cut emissions by up to 30 mln tons of CO₂ equivalent per year and reduce Turkey’s need for imported fossil fuels in the transport and logistics sectors.
To support the industry, the association has proposed 12-year biomethane purchase guarantees, a minimum floor price of €60/MWh with annual indexation, and permission for licensed producers to sell biomethane directly on the market or export it subject to technical requirements.
