Turkey may delay active corn imports until February
Turkey may refrain from increasing corn imports in the near term, with a new active import window potentially opening only around February. Market participants link this scenario to a possible expansion of grain sales from TMO state reserves, according to ASAP Agri.
Since September 1, Turkey’s state grain agency has been offering 11.5% protein wheat and feed wheat from its stocks. Market participants expect the program could soon be expanded to other wheat classes, including 12.5% and 13.5% protein wheat.
Turkish processors have also asked TMO to allow purchases of feed wheat from state reserves using barley and corn import licenses.
If approved, the move could further reduce Turkey’s demand for imported corn in the near term, as part of processors’ needs would be covered by grain from domestic state reserves.
Market participants expect that under this scenario Turkey could postpone active corn purchases on the international market until early 2027, potentially until February.
