Turkey bets on new wheat varieties to strengthen food security

Turkey has begun introducing new wheat varieties with improved drought tolerance and resilience to weather stress. The first plantings are underway in Denizli Province, where farmers and policymakers are seeking to stabilize wheat production amid climate challenges, weak demand from the milling industry and a tighter global grain market.

The new varieties are expected to deliver higher yields, improve drought resistance and reduce grain quality losses. This could help maintain domestic wheat production, reduce import dependence and ease pressure on flour and food prices.

According to analysts, investment in climate-resilient seed is becoming a key priority for the agricultural sector. Countries that adopt improved wheat varieties more rapidly could gain a competitive advantage through more stable harvests and lower exposure to weather-related risks.

At the same time, experts caution that the benefits of new varieties will not be immediate. Widespread adoption will take time, and seed innovation alone cannot fully offset other challenges facing the sector, including rising production costs, farmers’ financial constraints and fluctuating grain demand.

If the new varieties perform as expected, they could strengthen Turkey’s domestic wheat supply and help limit food price inflation. Otherwise, the country will remain more dependent on imports and exposed to volatile harvests and fluctuations in global grain prices.
