Trump rejects Iran’s proposal for seven-day ceasefire and reopening of Strait of Hormuz
US President Donald Trump rejected Iran’s proposal for a seven-day cessation of hostilities that would include reopening the Strait of Hormuz and resuming talks on Tehran’s nuclear program. The Wall Street Journal reported this, citing US officials.
Under Iran’s proposal, the United States would lift the blockade of Iranian ports, ease sanctions, including those on oil exports, and unblock some frozen assets. In return, Tehran would agree to a cessation of hostilities, the restoration of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and further negotiations on its nuclear program.
Iran conveyed its proposal to Washington through intermediaries and said it was awaiting an official US response. Tehran had previously said it was prepared to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within a week if military pressure was reduced and the blockade of Iranian ports was lifted.
According to the WSJ, US officials view contacts between Washington and Tehran through intermediaries as positive and constructive. At the same time, Trump, according to the newspaper, is skeptical about Iran’s willingness to meet US demands and told his aides that he expects strikes on Iran could resume after the US midterm elections in November.
Thus, Iran’s proposed seven-day plan calls for a simultaneous cessation of hostilities, the restoration of shipping through one of the world’s key oil arteries and a return to negotiations on its nuclear program. As of September 26, Tehran says it is awaiting an official response from Washington, despite reports that Trump rejected the proposal.
