The right is on the side of farmers: Polish agriculture minister supports protests
Polish Minister of Agriculture Czeslaw Sekerski said that farmers’ protests against the influx of goods from Ukraine are justified. He said this on Polish Radio.
“Farmers have legitimate fears, expectations, and demands to limit the excessive flow of goods from Ukraine and other non-European markets to the EU, in particular to Poland,” the minister said.
He noted that Poland is conducting bilateral negotiations with Ukraine to establish certain quotas and volumes that will be controlled.
“If there is too much of a certain product, there will be a blockade,” Sekerski said.
The minister acknowledged that the protests of Polish, French and German farmers were very useful in putting pressure on the European Commission.
Sekersky emphasized that in certain areas a complete blockade of imports would be required, as in the case of grain.
“Perhaps it will be necessary for sugar, poultry meat – we are analyzing this. We will make proposals to the EC, but we also want to establish this in our relations with Ukraine. We will definitely negotiate to the end, because the farmers and the Ministry of Agrarian Policy, which has a similar position to the farmers, are right,” he added.
European Commissioner for Agriculture Janusz Wojciechowski also supported the farmers’ protests and the blocking of the Ukrainian border.
“Dear farmers, protesters! Thank you once again for the food security you provide to all of us and for your efforts to protect the environment, climate and animal welfare. I am with you, I respect your protest, I support your demands,” Wojciechowski wrote on social network Х.
The European Commissioner promised to authorize restrictions on the import of sugar, poultry and eggs from Ukraine. According to him, a corresponding draft decision has already been prepared at the EU level.
