Tea prices at Indian auctions soared 21% due to global crop failure

A sharp increase in tea prices was recorded at one of the leading Indian tea auctions – immediately by 21%. This event came as a surprise to the market and attracted the attention of traders and analysts around the world. The increase in value occurred against the background of a limited supply of quality tea, which forced buyers to actively compete for available lots.

According to analysts, the main reason for the price jump was a significant crop failure in key exporting countries – India, Sri Lanka and Kenya. In these regions, adverse weather conditions (drought, excessive rainfall and floods) significantly reduced the harvest of tea leaves. Farmers report a decrease in yield by 10-20% compared to the previous season, which directly affected the volumes coming to auctions.

The situation is particularly acute in India, where major tea regions such as Assam and Darjeeling have faced a shortage of quality raw materials. Similar problems are observed in Kenya, where production has fallen due to erratic rainfall, and in Sri Lanka, where cyclones and labor shortages have complicated the harvest. This has led to an overall reduction in the global supply of tea.

Experts predict that the price increase may spread to the global market. Importers from Europe, the Middle East and North America are already preparing for higher purchase prices. In retail, this may lead to an increase in the price of tea for end consumers in the coming months.
