Syria receives more than 2.5 mln tons of wheat, expands strategic reserves

Syria has received more than 2.5 mln tons of wheat from the 2026 harvest, marking a significant step toward strengthening the country’s food security and expanding its strategic grain reserves. According to the Syrian Grain Establishment (SGE), this year’s procurement is well above last year’s level thanks to improved weather conditions and higher wheat production.

The largest share of wheat deliveries came from Hasakah province, which supplied more than 907 thousand tons, accounting for nearly half of total procurement. Other major producing regions include Raqqa, Aleppo, Hama, and Deir Ezzor. Earlier, Syria’s Ministry of Agriculture forecast the 2026 wheat harvest at 2.3–2.5 mln tons, compared with about 900 thsd tons in 2025.

To support the procurement campaign, the government operated 84 grain collection centers and upgraded silos, warehouses, and open storage facilities. Following rehabilitation, the country’s largest grain silo in Adra, near Damascus, has resumed operations with a storage capacity of up to 200 thsd tons of wheat.

During the first half of 2026, Syrian mills processed more than 1 mln tons of wheat, helping maintain stable flour supplies for both public and private bakeries. Authorities continue purchasing wheat from farmers while further expanding storage infrastructure to accommodate the new harvest.
