Syria expects wheat harvest at 2.5 mln tons
In Syria, authorities forecast wheat production at around 2.5 million tons in the upcoming season. The outlook is supported by improved agricultural indicators, which could enhance food security and move the country closer to self-sufficiency.
According to Grain Establishment Director Hassan al-Othman, Syria’s annual wheat demand is also estimated at about 2.5 million tons. Current stocks, along with contracted supplies, stand at roughly 1 million tons, partially covering domestic needs.
Preliminary assessments from the Ministry of Agriculture indicate a promising season if favorable weather conditions continue. This could help narrow the gap between domestic production and consumption.
The country has also made progress in upgrading grain storage infrastructure, with several silos and storage facilities rehabilitated using local expertise. However, dozens of additional sites still require modernization ahead of future harvests.
Authorities continue to classify wheat as a strategic crop and support the sector through input provision and improvements in marketing and storage systems. Boosting self-sufficiency remains a key priority amid ongoing economic challenges and sanctions.
