Sulina Canal changes vessel clearance procedures to speed up transit
Authorities in Sulina and Tulcea have changed some vessel clearance procedures to speed up transit through the Sulina Canal. The new rules apply to ships moving both upstream on the Danube and toward the sea.
Around 70 vessels are currently waiting to pass through Sulina, while another seven are completing formalities at the anchorage. The changes are expected to reduce clearance times and improve vessel traffic through the canal.
As of September 21, estimated waiting time for vessels heading to Reni, Izmail and Orlivka is 12–17 days. For Giurgiulesti, waiting time is estimated at 3–6 days, while for Galati, Braila and Tulcea it is 2–4 days.
Delays at the Sulina Canal remain an important factor for Danube logistics, including Ukrainian agricultural exports through the ports of Reni and Izmail.
The current maximum safe draft is 7.01 m at Sulina, 5.5 m on the Bystre Canal and 6.75 m on the Izmail–44th mile section.
